Scientists are still trying to find the perfect antioxidant fruit, that fruit that we can eat with pleasure while giving us all the health benefits that can be derived from antioxidants. Antioxidant formulas contain ingredients derived from vegetables and fruits that are known to be good sources of antioxidants. For instance, carrots are often used in many antioxidant formulas because of the vitamin A that can be derived in the carrots’ beta-carotene content. Ascorbic acid or vitamin C can be derived from citrus fruits. However, as healthy as carrots and citrus fruits are, not a lot of people are going to be willing to drink a combination of carrot and orange juice.

Mangostene is perhaps the closest to a perfect antioxidant fruit there is, and as soon as companies discovered this, they wasted no time in creating mangostene products and touting them as powerful health foods. Manufacturers of antioxidant products use almost the entirety of this fruit when making their antioxidant formulas. They supplement the fruit with other ingredients to make sure the formula meets the daily recommended allowance for each ingredient. Mangostene, as an antioxidant fruit, is perhaps the top antioxidant fruit today.

But what’s so special about antioxidants and why are companies pushing antioxidant products so much to consumers? Antioxidants are actually what can help the body fight the cancer-causing free radicals inside us. Free radicals are naturally produced by our body, and when left on their own, the free radicals can start serious damage to the cells, causing all sorts of diseases, including cancer. Free radicals weaken the immune system too.

It is believed that drinking juice from antioxidant fruits like mangostene can help slow down and heal many illnesses, including high blood pressure. However, many companies that make and sell antioxidant products are highly prone to exaggeration and making wild, unsubstantiated claims. Thus, it’s important that consumers be more cautious when buying any health product.

The government advises the buying public to be more discerning of any health advice, particularly when it’s coming from marketers trying to sell the latest antioxidant product. With all the popularity of antioxidant fruits, it’s still remains to be seen what their long-term benefits are. The juice from some vegetables and fruits may be beneficial but for others, it still remains unknown what their effects are over the long-term.

Just because the juice or parts of a fruit is used in an antioxidant formula is not an indication that fruit is an antioxidant fruit. The process the fruit undergoes during the creation of the formula plays a role. For instance, some manufacturers use mangostene in its entirety, including the skin, while some simply use the juice and pulp of this antioxidant fruit for creating their antioxidant formulas.
